Auden is an Australian alternative rock band formed in Whyalla, South
Australia in the early part of 2008. The band with an average age of 20 is made up of vocalist Melissa Vander Haak, vocals and guitarist Mwansa Msapenda, pianist Chelsea Schmitz, bassist George Msapenda, and drummer Robbie Schmitz.
The band's first album 'This Lost Love' was produced by South Australian production company Elusive Ensemble Entertainment of which frontman Mwansa Msapenda is part owner.
According to Mwansa it was the Martin Scorsese documentary on Bob Dylan No Direction Home that inspired him to write songs and eventually start a band. The band name Auden on the other hand was chosen for two reasons, the first being its likeness to the words audio and oration which the band felt conjured up great sound imagery and the second was based on Mwansa's great fascination with author and poet W.H. Auden, and the poem 'As I walked out one evening' in particular.
Auden's material is often placed in the same category as Damien Rice, The Frames and Radiohead while also being compared to bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Oasis and Coldplay.
Having met in a small country church, Auden are active supporters of various social and humanitarian causes, World Vision being one.
The band jokingly describe their fans as coffee house introverts who are never allowed to choose music at parties and who listen to Auden because they can't relate to real people.
At the moment the album 'This Lost Love' is available in selected stores and online at ITunes and Amazon Music. It is currently receiving a lot of positive feedback for its fresh sound and dynamic lyricism. An album of B-Sides is in the pipelines for release sometime next year.
